  • Vlootaalmoezenier Indonesia 1949-'52

Hello, I am new to this and am hoping someone can help me. I came out to Australia with my parents in 1956. Both of my parents are now deceased and I have come across two letters written to them (in Dutch) by a friend of theirs who was at the time with the Royal Dutch Navy as 'vlootaalmoezenier', which, if my grasp of the language means that he was a Naval Chaplain. His name on the envelope is listed as "G.J VAN RIJNSOEVER C.M."
The letters are dated 20 August, '49, (from Surabaya) and 19 August '52 (from Sorong/Sarong).
I would be grateful if somebody could give me some information/images of this person. The correspondence from him indicates a deeply spiritual and warm personality, and my parents obviously held him in high regard.
I do not know whether he was attached to a base or a vessel or a fleet, as none of this is mentioned in the letters.
    Thankyou,
    Kitty Knappstein

    Hi Kitty,

Welcome on Dutchfleet. I hope some of our members will be able to help you out with pictures. I can just confirm Aalmoezenier is Navy Chaplain. I might be able to look up his details in historic copies of the "Naamboek Officieren", list of Navy Officers, of those years which will show dates of his first warrant and consecutive promotions. I can also give you address details of the "Dienst RKGV", the HQ of military Roman Catholic Chaplains located in the establishment where I work too in The Hague. I doubt if they have a lot of personal information after all these years but you won't know until you ask them. Just send me a "PB" with all details you have and with any specific questions you might have.

Hello Paul, and thank you for that.
I really don't have too much on this person as I was born after that time. All I realize is that he was a significant person in my parents' lives. I can only guess from the correspondence that he was perhaps a childhood friend of my mother and father - perhaps from Utrecht or Rotterdam.

Something about blackouts in Holland was spoken of, and playing Monopoly? and card games during the raids was discussed by me because of a homework assignment in early school days here in Australia. Typically, being a child I thought no more at the time, and those conversations were poorly remembered when I found these letters.

As you can imagine, these young people went their separate ways: G(erard?) (the signature is not too clear , but certainly looks like that) was more a friend than an official contact.

The photo of Folkert is from http://www.maritiemdigitaal.nl

A search on the site also reveals that there is a photo album of G.J. van Rijnsoever in the possession of the Mariniersmuseum (Marine Museum) in Rotterdam about his service in Batavia (1947) and his time with the Marine Brigade in Surabaya (1947-194.

Also, there is a 14-page memorial of him. http://www.maritiemdigitaal.nl/index...l&id=107004836

Others have already added more info than I expect I could find. My apology for not adding the explanation to the abbreviation "PB". It's the button to the right of a message, allowing you to send a telegram (personal message, or peroonlijk bericht in Dutch) to the message author. If you feel uneasy about leaving personal information on a public forum you can edit the address out of your message by pushing the button "wijzig" (= edit) in it, I already left it out of this quote.

Jan, die link dat dat memorie werkt niet meer. Zoekend op maritiemdigitaal levert ook niks op. Ik help Kitty een beetje met de speurtocht en dat memorie zou haar erg veel helpen. Heb jij de gouden tip? dank Harry
